Trip to Manali

Trip to Manali, Rohtang Pass.
Date = 12th December, 2008
Troupe = Myself, Vishal & Anish
Being an North Indian, always was fascinated by the charm and beauty of Himalaya's in Manali & Rohtang pass when I used to hear from people about their experiences from that place. But Never got a chance to visit that place.
As We 3 all are travel freaks, Always plans of going to new places and have different experiences altogether. Besides that one more reason was there & that was roam & have fun till you get married, after that u never know when you will get chance to go & have fun with your friends :-).
Keeping this in mind we planned for the trip one week before & finalized the date i:e 12th Dec. Booking transport and hotel responsibility came to me, don't know why...:-). Guess they trust me more. At first we decided will go by Volvo Bus and will have a taxi there to roam around. But when we calculated the cost with Taxi, it was little more but going with taxi was always much more comfortable then Volvo plus you get the freedom on your own.
So, we decided will go by car and will book hotel once we reach Manali as booking hotel in advance from Chandigarh was always a risk. Because you never know what services you will get there once u step in hotel. The day finally approached Friday, 12th Dec, 2009. The time given to the taxi guy was 10 P:M so we did some of the packing in the morning itself & guess what he was bang on time. But before that we had some fresh fried chicken and Roti.
We packed our bags and kept the bags in car. We made sure that we had kept all the stuff we needed including jackets, Sweat shirts and Sweater bcz its gonna be really chilling there. We pronounced "Jai Mata Di" as the car got started and slowly car started moving towards one of the world's most beautiful place called Manali. We stopped at ATM and took some more cash so that we don't face any difficulty on our way. Again, they made me the financer and kept all cash
with me. God know's why this happens to me again & again. Anyways, We left from ATM not knowing after 20 Km from here a great surprise is waiting for us..
Anish shouted, Guys!!!. I said what happened why are you shouting. He said please forgive me i have done a blunder mistake. Vishal also said what has happened to you, why feeling sorry. He said I have forgotten the Digi Cam at home.
There he goes. we said, what!! U forgot the cam at home, are you Crazy? Don't kid with us. He said No believe me i have forgotten the cam at home. I am sure after this incident he must have listened hundreds of abuses from us (that too in Hindi :-)).
After running around 2 Hours, Driver said: Sir, am feeling sleepy. i said what. Ground skipped from our feet after hearing this we it was 6-7 hours more left for the journey. Then after 10 minutes stopped at some Dhaba & decided that Driver will go for 2 hour sleep and meanwhile we enjoyed some hot Tea & then slept for 1 hour in the car itself.
At around 2 A:M, driver got up and we were happy to see that he was fully charged again to take us to our dream destination. We drive continuously for 4 hours and was about to reach Kullu, on the way to Kullu we saw many beautiful big Mountains. Side way was floating Byas river. It was looking as beautiful as ganga River.
We reached Kullu by 6:30 A:M, the next day & we were welcomed by beautiful Sun rise coming from in between the mountains. We had good hot Tea again and Guess what, Sony Ericsson mobile phone came to the rescue. We clicked some good photographs. After half an hour headed towards Manali. we were welcomed by series of good range himalayas with snow on them & bright sun light falling on them was icing on the cake. Clicked some more photographs of Himalayas and of ourself.
We reached Manali by 10 A:M & started searching for Hotels. Some were good some were bad, but finally settled for Himachal Tourism Hotel near MALL road. Hotel was good, we checked in, behind room, there was a balcony & from there you can see byas river was going making some nice sounds. On the whole it was a very fresh feeling. we sat on terris in bright sun light and had Tea. It was amazing. We took some time to get fresh.
At around 11:30 A:M we started walking towards Market to get our Breakfast. We found one small shop where one person was making some good Paranthas. We ate 2 Egg paranthas and we were full till our throat. Believe me these Paranthas were tastier than a 5 start hotel food.
We asked taxi driver to take us to Rohtang Paas. It was about 3 hour from Manali. KM wise distance is less but road conditions are very poor. after running 2 hour what we saw was Snow lying on the road. Although it was not much but was still enough to catch our attention. We can see water droplets were freezed from the water fall and it was just snow hanging down from the water fall. We started feeling Hungary again & to our surprise there was no single shop in the
mid way. No shop of Puncture guy, no shop of snacks, tea etc. Thank God our snacks came to rescue, which we took from Manali when we started from there.
The roads were very dangerous. On one side it was a deep valley & on other side it was great high mountains. After some miles away we saw wooden bridge was broken and the car has to go from the river itself with big sharp stones in it. Although it was a patch of just 2 meters but at one moment it took our breath away & We thought car will certainly get stuck in this river & will get punctured bcz big sharp stones were there in the river.
And great there is no Punture shop back & forward. We finally remembered God again & driver put the ist Gear & after putting lot of race and pressure car was finally out of the river. We were relaxed when we came out of the river & thank god. Actually thanks to the Driver who was an expert in driving. we thought this driver is excellent in driving and a good human being not knowing completely this same driver will give us a great surprise later on our trip.
After some miles away some people were doing Para Sailing. We did not get courage for it as it was flying in the valley and then it was coming back to the valley. after come more miles Trafic Jam welcomed us. Traffic jam was there because in a certain patch of around 5-6 meters all ice was there and no ground.
Now car has to go through this ice road. we decided to get down as we saw other cars were moving through and were little skidding towards deep down valley. We passed by our foots and it was really shivering outside. We guided driver to go through this patch carefully & finally he was out of this patch.
Finally we reached Rohtang Paas, in fact 2 KM ahead of this point known as Zero Point around 2 P:M. What a view Man, simply awesome!!!!This was the ist phrase which came out from our mouth. Snow was all around with a big mountain peak where people were doing skating. we lay down on the snow moved here and there in snow and enjoyed the view with some good and strange poses photography. Sun light was so bright there that you can't move there without sun glasses.
Light was so crystal clear that you feel you are very close to Sun. we were shivering like anything because temp was -5 degree there. Ahhhh!!! then Coffee wala came to our rescue, wondered how come he's serving hot coffee at this much height and in these hard conditions where oxygen level is also less. He charged 20 bucks for one very small glass of coffee, but anyways it was okay by seeing at the conditions there. It was hot inside the kettle but as soon as it came out of the kettle it got cold in just 2 seconds. we drunk it in just 2 sips.
After having some more fun we decided to move back to Manali. As conditions are bad, you never know when snow fall will happen & roads will be closed. We started moving from there by looking at the sun set in between the mountains. We slept for some time, had some snacks in between and finally reached Manali .
by 7 P:M. We decided we will not go to hotel room & will have some fun on MALL road itself. We roamed around here and there, bought himachali caps, had some chats & packed some snacks for our drinks as it was really cold there. we gave 1 quarter of Rum to Driver and bought ourself an half of Bacardi. We returned to hotel room by 8:30 P:M opened the bottle and started drinking. After some chit chats ordered food in the room itself. we ate food and don't know when we got asleep as we were really tired.
Next morning was as fresh as a fresh dew. We had hot shower bath & after that checked out of the room. We went to a good restaurant and had some good breakfast consisting of Aloo Parantha's, omellete & french toasts. After food we went to Hidimba temple which is surrounded by sky touching trees. we spent some time in the temple, clicked some photographs. We came out of the temple and a guy outside offered us to click a photograph on Yak. As i was not
interested, vishal and anish went ahead for the photograph. Vishal looked as funny on that Yak as he always looks and Anish, Oh my God!!! it was looking like One Yak is sitting on another Yak. We decided to leave from there to Manikaran.
After a journey of 1.5 hour we reached Manikaran as it is famous for hot water Spring. We went there & hot water was coming out from many places. We went to Gurdwara and had Langar(Lunch) there. we saw people were boiling rice in the hot water. After that we started from there & headed towards Kullu.
Midway we took some more snaps by sitting on the road or by the Byas river side. In kullu we went to one factory who make shawls as kullu is famous for its warm shawls. Everybody took shawls for their family members. Then we started moving from there and now the target was to reach Chandigarh.
There comes the surprise package from our old age driver. The songs which we were playing on the CD, he was changing the songs himself bcz he doesn't like this particular song. He was playing only those songs which he likes. we said, What the hell!! but we did't argue much as we know our life is in his hands as he is on the driver seat. Then he started saying about his family members and keep on continuing. We all slept & didn't reply much. Then suddenly he said I am Hungry & tired. We said OK & stopped at dhaba to give him food 7 some rest. when we were approaching Chandigarh, there comes a sharp turn in between. On that turn he suddenly said Sir, this turn is very dangerous and there is a Tree down there on which Ghosts stays. We said, What the Crap!!!. Then we didn't listen to him much and started chatting with each other.
At around 11 P:M we reached Chandigarh. We stopped at our house and took our bags upstairs. We paid the driver & still gave him the Tip. We went to our rooms and firstly checked for the snaps which we have taken from our Sony Mobiles phones. We were amazed to see pictures were so clear and sharp.
Whosoever, saw the pictures never believed us that these pictures have been taken from a 2 MP Mobile Camera. Thanks to SONY. We went to our beds and get asleep.
Overall this trip was wonderful, enjoyable & full of fun. I must appreciate the beauty of Himalayas & would advice everybody to go there at least once.
This trip will remain in our memory fresh for many years to come.
Thanks,
Arun
